7 Mile Beach South Course, opened in December 2025, is the debut newbuild by Clayton, DeVries & Pont, with Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries shaping a minimalist links across dramatic coastal dunes near Hobart. Just 10 minutes from the airport, it transforms a former pine forest into pure seaside golf on a narrow peninsula with ocean views throughout.
The layout uses natural terrain masterfully – high dunes, protected valleys, and beachside holes – with only 37 bunkers, wall-to-wall fescue, and short grass areas that encourage creative recovery and multiple routes. Standouts include the quirky dual-green par-4 8th and the short, tempting par-4 5th by the shore.
It offers engaging, playable links golf that rewards imagination in a stunning Tasmanian setting.
Barnbougle Dunes on Tasmania’s north coast is a modern links masterpiece by Tom Doak and Michael Clayton.
Routed through towering dunes along the Bass Strait, it delivers authentic seaside golf with creative bunkering and a collection of standout holes – including the world-class par-3 7th (Tom’s Little Devil) that ranks among the best short par 3s anywhere in the world.
The routing flows naturally through the landscape, blending strategic challenges with breathtaking ocean views. Doak uses the land fantastically, meaning that there are many ways to get to the pin on every hole, you just have to find them!
Barnbougle Lost Farm, opened in 2010, is Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw’s excellent companion to the Dunes next door. Routed along the Bass Strait coastline, it features wide, tumbling fairways through massive dunes, creative short grass chipping areas, and a natural, minimalist design that feels perfectly at home in the landscape.
The course shines with exceptional variety — dramatic ocean holes, clever bunkering, and memorable greens that reward imaginative play.
The debate will no doubt ensure after your visit as to which course at Barnbougle your group prefers. Both are world class and you are in for a real treat!
Cape Wickham Golf Links on remote King Island delivers one of the most spectacular coastal golf experiences in the world. Designed by Mike DeVries with Darius Oliver, this 2015 masterpiece hugs the rugged northwest coast of Tasmania, offering ocean views from every hole, dramatic cliffs, and eight holes directly along Bass Strait.
The routing flows brilliantly across sandy dunes and open terrain, blending strategic links play with breathtaking scenery — including the iconic Cape Wickham Lighthouse as a constant backdrop. Firm, fast conditions encourage creative ground game, while the natural landscape creates thrilling, memorable holes without a weak one in sight.
It is pure, exhilarating golf in an unforgettable island setting — a true world-class destination.
Kingston Heath stands as one of the world’s premier courses and a Sandbelt masterpiece. It’s a 1925 design by Dan Soutar enhanced by Alister MacKenzie’s legendary bunkering. Built on a small site with relatively flat terrain, it proves great golf thrives through strategic genius rather than dramatic elevation.
The course dazzles with impeccable firm-and-fast conditions, seamless sandy wastes blending into native heath grasses, and some of the finest bunkering and green complexes anywhere. Holes like the stunning par-3 15th demand precision and creativity.
It is pure, timeless strategic golf – rewarding, visually captivating, and endlessly playable.
New South Wales Golf Club in La Perouse, Sydney, is one of Australia’s most spectacular layouts. Originally routed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1926, this coastal course occupies a dramatic peninsula overlooking Botany Bay, with rugged terrain, undulating fairways, and constant exposure to the sea winds.
The routing provides exceptional variety – blind shots, doglegs, strategic bunkering, and lightning-fast greens that demand accuracy and creativity. Standouts include the breathtaking par-5 5th with its downhill approach to an ocean-fringed green, and the iconic par-3 6th, perched on a rocky outcrop requiring a precise carry over the cove.
Recent renovations by Mackenzie & Ebert have been well received and seem to have assured its place in the world top 100. New South Wales delivers a tough yet rewarding experience in a stunning location – challenging, scenic, and unforgettable.
Ocean Dunes on King Island delivers a strong modern links experience along 2km of rugged Tasmanian coastline. Designed by Graeme Grant and opened in 2015, the course works through rolling dunes with consistent ocean views, several coastal holes, and classic links elements – including notable par-3s like the short 4th and long 10th playing across rocky inlets.
Six holes run close to the ocean, combining strategic design with natural scenery, firm fescue fairways, and smooth bent grass greens. It’s a spectacular place to play golf and well worth a visit if you are on King Island to play Cape Wickham.
Peninsula Kingswood North, in Frankston on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, is a premier Sandbelt layout elevated to elite status through a major 2018 redesign by OCCM (Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Clayton, Mike Cocking, and Ashley Mead). Built on undulating sandy terrain with roots in Sloan Morpeth’s 1960s design, it delivers firm, fast conditions, dramatic elevation changes, strategic bunkering, and irregular, true-running greens.
The course offers fantastic variety – interesting doglegs, challenges that reward precise positioning and creativity. The conditioning here is always fantastic, the practice facilities are among the very best you will find anywhere in the world and the clubhouse is fantastic. A very worth addition to any sandbelt itinerary.
Royal Adelaide Golf Club in Seaton, near Adelaide, is a historic Australian gem that feels like an inland links course. Originally laid out in the early 1900s and substantially redesigned by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in 1926, it retains its open, sandy character with dramatic dunes integrated into play — thanks to MacKenzie’s vision of routing through, rather than around, the natural craters and contours.
The layout offers multiple playing lines on most holes, rewarding strategy and creativity for all levels while delivering a stern championship test from the tips. Standouts include the world-class short par-4 3rd (a MacKenzie masterpiece with its “leg of mutton” green and no bunkers needed), the blind approach over a crater on the 11th, and the superb 14th. Recent gentle enhancements by Renaissance Golf (Tom Doak’s team) have refined it further without losing its soul.
Consistently ranked among Australia’s top 10 courses, it is engaging, varied, impeccably presented, and a true delight to play.
Royal Melbourne’s East Course, opened in 1932, is a superb Sandbelt classic designed by Alex Russell and built under greenskeeper Mick Morcom’s supervision. The West may garner much of the attention, but the East still ranks among Australia’s top handful of courses and consistently features in the world Top 100.
The layout captivates with its cleverly bunkered holes and subtle but severe green contours. Several short-to-mid-length par-4s require pinpoint accuracy off the tee and plenty of imagination around the greens.
A round on the East is an excellent experience that holds its own as elite Sandbelt golf — engaging, impeccably presented, and well worth playing.
The West Course at Royal Melbourne is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses on earth. Designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie and superbly executed by Alex Russell, this Sandbelt masterpiece combines strategic depth, dramatic bunkering, and brilliant use of natural contours.
The routing flows beautifully across rolling terrain, with a series of strong doglegs, giant hazards, and fiendishly shaped greens that demand creativity and precision. Firm, fast conditions amplify every challenge while rewarding thoughtful play.
It remains an iconic test of golf that feels timeless yet endlessly engaging — a true bucket-list experience for any golfer fortunate enough to play it.

This now feels like a classic sandbelt course with firm, fast conditions, exquisite bunkering right up against collars, small contoured greens, and strategic depth that tests every facet of the game.
This is a fun course, it opens with a very short par 4 and the drivable par-4 15th offers one of the Sandbelt’s most intriguing risk-reward moments.
Now ranked in the world’s Top 100 golf courses, Victoria stands among Australia’s elite – a joy to play, impeccably presented, and a must for any Sandbelt visitor.
